Trooper Gerald Mason Funeral Set for Saturday

Funeral services for an Illinois State Trooper who died on the Dan Ryan Expressway Oct. 1 will be held this weekend in Chicago. Trooper Gerald Mason was discovered by citizens in his squad car near 43rd Street on the expressway he patrolled with a bullet wound to the head. He was rushed to the University of Chicago Hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death a suicide.

His services will begin on Friday, Oct. 8 at Cannon Funeral Home 1001 Madison Street in suburban Maywood. Visitation will be at Cannon from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. On Saturday, a large procession is scheduled to leave the funeral home around 10 a.m. to take Mason’s body to Holy Rock MB Church at 5854 S. Morgan in Chicago where funeral services are scheduled to be held.

Mason was a graduate of Hyde Park Career Academy and Western Illinois University. He had been an Illinois State Trooper for 11 years.

Citizens can expect heavy traffic congestion in the areas where the procession will take place in Maywood and in the Englewood neighborhood in Chicago. There will be a large law enforcement presence in the area as well.
