Over a Hundred Turn Out for Aaliyah Newell Vigil in Chicago
March 25, 2022
As Chicago police continue their investigation into the robbery and murder of popular Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority member Aaliyah Newell, members of the Divine Nine, led by Newell’s AKA sisters held a vigil outside her South Side home Friday evening. The gathering in frigid spring temperatures symbolized the strength of the African American Greek organizations and larger community as a whole. Newell’s murder in one of the world’s greatest cities is reason many of the Black Greek organizations believe their work in the community is so vital. Newell, whose body was found restrained Wednesday night, was looking forward to the Chicago summer that is filled with summer music festivals and live events. She was 47 and worked as an adjunct professor. Persons with information can leave an anonymous tip at cpdtip.com.
